Baseball season has returned to Queens, and Citi Field was buzzing with excitement as the New York Mets kicked off their 2024 home opener against the Milwaukee Brewers on March 29th, 2024. After Thursday’s rainout delay, fans were eager to fill the stands on a crisp but sunny Friday afternoon, marking a fresh chapter for the Mets under their new leadership.

The energy at Citi Field was palpable. As I arrived, I could feel the buzz of anticipation from passionate fans donning Mets jerseys, rally towels in hand, and plenty of new merchandise from the revamped team store. From families with young kids to die-hard season ticket holders, Citi Field became a sea of blue and orange, signaling the long-awaited return of America’s favorite pastime.

The day began with a moment of silence honoring NYPD Officer Jonathan Diller, who tragically lost his life earlier in the week. This solemn moment reminded everyone of the importance of community and unity, themes that baseball so often brings to the forefront.

On the field, the Mets started strong with Starling Marte delivering the first home run of the season, sending a roaring cheer through the stands. His line drive to left center marked a hopeful beginning, but by the end of the day, the Brewers managed to clinch the win, 3-1. Despite the loss, fans remained optimistic, soaking in the thrill of Opening Day and looking forward to the potential this season holds.

For Mets fans, Opening Day is about more than just baseball—it’s about tradition. From the new food offerings like Takumi Taco and Benny’s Cuban Café to old favorites like Shake Shack, Citi Field continues to deliver an all-encompassing fan experience. Families cheered from the stands, couples took selfies with the iconic Home Run Apple, and enthusiastic groups of friends toasted to what they hope will be an exciting season.

Citi Field itself has undergone some notable upgrades this season. From the remodeled Delta Club to new LED boards enhancing the viewing experience, fans were treated to a polished stadium atmosphere. A big highlight for the day was the debut of the Queens Crew, the Mets’ new in-house dance team, who brought high energy and entertainment between innings.

Even in chilly weather, the spirit of Mets Opening Day remained warm. For me as a photographer, the raw energy of the crowd, the crack of the bat, and the simple joys of a sunny afternoon at the ballpark are what make days like these so rewarding to capture. Moments like a young fan catching their first glimpse of the field or friends laughing over a hot dog embody the magic of Opening Day.

While the Mets may not have started the season with a win, the day was about celebration, new beginnings, and community spirit. From honoring local heroes to enjoying baseball traditions, Citi Field once again proved why it’s such a beloved hub for New Yorkers and visitors alike.

Here’s to a season of hope, home runs, and unforgettable moments. Let’s go Mets!
