Reflections and Tips from a Life-long New Yorker by Pamela Goldstein
As a lifelong New Yorker and photographer, I’ve always viewed the Times Square New Year’s Eve celebration as something for tourists—not for me. When my fiancée suggested we go this year, I was very reluctant. The idea of standing for hours in the cold, surrounded by massive crowds, didn’t exactly sound appealing. But as it turns out, sometimes stepping outside your comfort zone leads to moments you’ll never forget.
Experiencing New Year’s Eve in Times Square for the first time was both challenging and magical. From rain-soaked chaos to unforgettable moments at midnight, here’s my reflection on the night—and advice for anyone considering joining the festivities.

The Downpour and Its Challenges
This year’s New Year’s Eve celebration was marked by relentless rain! As a professional photographer with a press pass, I thankfully had the flexibility to move around and seek shelter under an awning during the heaviest downpours. Despite these allowances, I still ended up soaked, and when you’re wet and cold you no longer care about the stupid ball. For the general public who can’t seek shelter, they just had to grin and bear it. The lesson: if you’re planning to go, be prepared for whatever weather may come—it can make or break the experience.

Crowd Observations and Entry Timing
Contrary to popular belief, the crowd wasn’t as dense as it appears on television. In addition, around 11 PM, after the rain subsided, I noticed that authorities were still allowing people into the viewing areas. Some of these late arrivals were hotel guests with special permissions, but others seemed like ordinary attendees. This suggests that arriving early in the morning isn’t necessary unless you want a front-row spot near the stage. Based on what I observed, arriving later in the evening—closer to 10 or 11 PM—might still give you a chance to enjoy the experience without standing for hours in the cold or rain. The kiddos will definitely be happier, and might even still be awake!

The Midnight Magic
Despite my initial reluctance to attend and the challenges posed by the weather, the moment the clock struck midnight was undeniably magical. The cascade of confetti, the collective cheer, and the excitement of the crowd created an atmosphere that was nothing short of electric, to my surprise. For me, the moment was extra special because I was with my fiancée. Sharing a kiss at midnight with your partner amidst the confetti and cheers is truly an unforgettable experience.

Inclusivity for People with Disabilities
If you or someone you know has a disability and is considering attending Times Square on New Year’s Eve, I want to highlight something important: Times Square does an excellent job of accommodating people with special needs. Designated areas are reserved for individuals with disabilities, ensuring they can safely enjoy the festivities while being part of the excitement. These areas are well-organized and prioritize safety and involvement, which was heartwarming to see. In addition, I was heartened the introduction of a Sensory Activation Vehicle (SAV) provided a calming space for neurodivergent guests, ensuring that everyone could partake in the festivities comfortably. This inclusive initiative reflects the event’s commitment to accessibility and was a commendable addition to the celebration.

My “Expert” Advice for Future Attendees
• Consider Arrival Time: Arriving closer to 10 or 11 PM might suffice unless you want a front-row spot. This allows you to avoid standing for hours in the cold or rain while still getting to enjoy the main event.
• Weather Preparedness: Check the forecast. Rain can be a game-changer, especially since umbrellas are banned. Dress in layers and invest in quality waterproof gear.
• Post-Midnight Festivities: Don’t leave immediately after the ball drops! The streets transform into a massive party with incredible energy—it’s a great way to extend the celebration.

Final Thoughts
Attending New Year’s Eve in Times Square is a bucket-list experience—even for a seasoned New Yorker like me. While I might not rush to do it again, primarily because of the unpredictable weather, I’m incredibly grateful for the memories made. If you’re contemplating it, I recommend trying it at least once. With smart planning, the right timing, and a bit of luck with the weather, it can be a night you’ll never forget!

Personal Highlight
On a personal note, my fiancée and I added our own special twist to the night. As photographers, we couldn’t resist the opportunity to create something meaningful. We brought along a “Save the Date” sign to announce our wedding on September 14, 2025, and captured the moment in the heart of Times Square. The vibrant lights and the energy of the crowd made it the perfect backdrop for a photo we’ll treasure forever.
