Coney Island, Brooklyn, April 13, 2025

The day kicked off at 10 a.m. on the Riegelmann Boardwalk at West 12th Street. The air buzzed with anticipation as Pastor Mary Smith of the Salt and Sea Mission led the blessing, a powerful ritual intended to safeguard the thousands of rides and visitors for the season ahead. Speeches from local elected officials underscored the park’s vital role in the Coney Island community, followed by a captivating performance by Broadway actress Aneesa Folds, adding a touch of theatrical magic to the morning.

Beyond the Wonder Wheel, Deno’s Wonder Wheel Park, still proudly owned and operated by Denos’ sons, unveiled its more than 20 rides. From the whimsical Dizzy Dragons and classic Tilt-A-Whirl to the exhilarating Sea Serpent coaster for young adventurers, and the twisting Phoenix Roller Coaster for older thrill-seekers, there’s a ride for every age and courage level. It’s clear the Vourderis family takes pride in offering “fun and laughter” to families, even introducing their 2025 Big Fun Card with new discount packages.

Safety, of course, is paramount, and the Blessing of the Rides is symbolically reinforced by rigorous annual inspections by the city. It’s a dual assurance that the thrills are as safe as they are exciting.

The opening of Deno’s comes as Coney Island prepares for its full summer swing. Just down the boardwalk, Luna Park opened recently, and the Brooklyn Cyclones have already played their home opener. The Alliance for Coney Island’s public relations manager, Cindy Vourderis, rightly noted the full slate of offerings: “From the classic thrills… and exciting exhibits at the aquarium and Coney Island History Project, to the great food and exhilarating baseball games, there’s something for everyone.” Coney Island truly is a destination for timeless family fun.

An Exclusive Conversation with Dennis Vourderis

Adding a truly unique dimension to my coverage, I had the privilege of conducting an exclusive interview with Dennis Vourderis, co-owner of Deno’s Wonder Wheel Amusement Park. Stepping away from the bustling crowds, I gained invaluable insights into the family’s deep-rooted connection to Coney Island, their passion for preserving this cherished landmark, and their vision for keeping the spirit of the Wonder Wheel alive for generations to come. His dedication is palpable, a true testament to the legacy his father began.

My lens sought to capture the pure, unadulterated joy that permeated Deno’s Wonder Wheel Park today. It’s a place where history intertwines with modern thrills, and where the simple act of a ride can spark incredible memories. As a photographer, capturing these moments of intergenerational delight and the enduring magic of Coney Island is always a privilege.
