Trusted Standards for Visual Journalism

NYC In Focus is committed to accurate, independent, street-level visual journalism. These standards explain how we approach reporting, photography, captions, verification, corrections, and editorial independence.

Our work focuses on public life, civic institutions, public events, neighborhood stories, cultural moments, and visual reporting across New York City.

Our Mission

Clear, useful and visually grounded coverage

NYC In Focus documents New York City through accredited press photography, civic reporting, and visual storytelling. Our work focuses on public life, neighborhood stories, cultural moments, civic institutions, and events that shape the five boroughs.

We aim to publish coverage that helps readers understand what happened, where it happened, who was involved, and why it matters.

Accuracy and Verification

Accuracy is the foundation of our reporting and photojournalism. Before publishing, NYC In Focus works to verify names, locations, dates, event details, official actions, and public statements.

  • We identify uncertainty when a fact cannot be fully confirmed.
  • We avoid presenting rumors, assumptions, or social media claims as established fact.
  • We distinguish between direct observation, official statements, public records, and commentary.
  • We update stories when new verified information becomes available.

Photography, Captions and Visual Context

NYC In Focus treats images as journalism. Captions should provide meaningful context, including the subject, location, event, date, or circumstances when known.

  • Images should not be staged or altered in a way that changes journalistic meaning.
  • Basic edits such as cropping, exposure correction, color balance, and tonal adjustment may be used when they do not mislead the viewer.
  • Archival or illustrative images should be identified when they are not from the event being reported.
  • Photo credits and licensing information should be preserved whenever possible.

Independence and Conflicts of Interest

NYC In Focus seeks to maintain editorial independence from political campaigns, public officials, organizations, advertisers, event organizers, and outside interests.

Editorial judgment should be based on news value, public interest, visual importance, and relevance to New York City readers.

If a relationship, assignment, sponsorship, or outside role may affect how coverage is perceived, we aim to disclose that context where appropriate.

Sources, Attribution and Fairness

When reporting relies on official records, public statements, interviews, or third-party information, NYC In Focus aims to make that sourcing clear.

  • We attribute claims to the source making them.
  • We give people and organizations a fair opportunity to be represented when a story directly concerns them.
  • We avoid unnecessary harm, sensationalism, or dehumanizing descriptions.
  • We prioritize public-interest value over spectacle.

Corrections and Updates

When NYC In Focus identifies a factual error, we aim to correct it promptly and transparently. Corrections may include updates to article text, captions, dates, names, links, or other relevant details.

To request a correction, email howard@nycinfocus.com with the article link, the issue you believe needs correction, and any supporting information.

Public Interest and Respect

NYC In Focus covers public events and civic issues with attention to context, dignity, and public-interest value. The goal is to inform readers without sensationalizing people, neighborhoods, or difficult moments.

Visual journalism should help readers understand the scene, not distort it.
