New York City has adopted tougher sidewalk-shed rules, opened a design-build procurement for apartment renovations at NYCHA developments, and awarded nearly $441,000 for FDNY search-and-rescue camera systems.

Sidewalk sheds now carry new deadlines and penalties

The Department of Buildings adopted rules requiring owners to show documented progress when renewing permits for sidewalk sheds tied to façade repairs.

Beginning with the second renewal of a shed permit issued after January 12, 2026, work must have been performed during the permit period unless an exception applies. Permit renewals must include a progress report prepared by a registered design professional, and contractors must maintain a work log updated at least once a week.

The rule sets a $2,500 penalty for failing to file an acceptable progress report. Separate one-time penalties are $5,000 for failing to file complete construction documents within five months, $10,000 for failing to file a complete permit application within eight months, and $20,000 for failing to complete permitted façade repairs within two years.

The rule allows extension requests and challenges, but those processes carry filing requirements and fees. One- and two-family homes and sheds connected to permitted new-building, enlargement or demolition work are excluded from several provisions.

NYCHA seeks teams for in-unit renovations

NYCHA opened the first stage of a two-step design-build procurement covering three groups of developments in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Queens.

The contemplated work may include replacement of plumbing and waste infrastructure, kitchen and bathroom repairs, conversion from steam heat to electric heat and hot water using heat pumps, electrical upgrades, flood-mitigation work and elevator modernization at one site.

The scope may also include asbestos, lead and mold abatement and temporary relocation of residents. NYCHA expects to shortlist up to three teams for each project. Statements of qualification are due August 27, 2026, at 2 p.m.

The notice does not identify final project costs, construction schedules or the exact number of apartments that would be renovated. Those details would be expected later in the request-for-proposals stage.

FDNY buys search-and-rescue camera systems

The Fire Department awarded a $440,792 contract to Industrial Strength Industries LLC for search-and-rescue camera systems.

The notice says the cameras are part of the standard tool inventory used by Squad Companies and are intended to support emergency operations, training and equipment consistency.

The filing does not list the number of systems purchased, the individual models or the companies that will receive them.

What to watch next

The sidewalk-shed rule is final and sets immediate compliance requirements. The NYCHA procurement remains at the qualifications stage, while the FDNY camera purchase is listed as an award. NYC In Focus will continue checking agency records for implementation details, project costs and deployment information.
